Mr. Suhas Gopinath, CEO & President, Globals Inc meeting with Dr. A.P.J.Abdul Kalam, The President of India
Mr. Suhas Gopinath is an alumnus of Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan. From a young age, he had a passion for information. A passion so energetic, that it drove Mr.Gopinath to set up a multinational company christened Globals Inc. At the age of 14 he was recognized as the world's youngest web developer through his project 'coolhidustan.com' . A Fortune 500 company , being amazed at his talent, offered him job which included a pay check of $2000 per week, a chauffer driven car and an executive apartment. All this did not lure Mr. Gopinath as he wanted to be an entrepreneur himself. He set up Globals Inc. in the year 2000 at San Jose, California as the laws in India did not permit him to set up a company in the country as he was a minor.
Since then, Mr. Suhas Gopinath has drastically grown as a multinational company with offices in more than 11 countries. The company offers tailor made solutions in the fields of web, mobile, networking e-commerce and software. Globals Inc. has already served more thatn 400 clients worldwide including Fortune 500 companies.
Mr. Suhash Gopinath at age of 16 was recognised as the world's youngest entrepreneur by CNBC and e-Business, Canada. At the age of 17 he was recognised as the world's youngest CEO by leading media across the globe including BBC, Washington Times, Streats-Singapore,Times of India etc. In the year 2003, a Singapore based company approached Globals Inc. to outsource their projects worth $38,000. The law stated that an executive signatory must be above 18.This cost him the deal. Nevertheless, he steered Globals Inc. further, with sheer determination.
His team has grown from a mere 4 members to a staggering 400. Under his leadership the team has served more than 200 clients. At the International Business Awards, he was recognised as one of the best Business Executives.
However, the climb thus far was not a smooth sailing. Two years ago "coolhindustan.com" was hacked by Pakistan based hackers. They attacked Mr. Gopinath and threatened him of his life. Threatening calls to close down his enterprise followed. Putting all these behind, Mr. Gopinath has bravely driven a quality team of Globals Inc;setting the global trend.
Mr. Gopinath's mission has been to establish a platform for youth where they find encouragement in their chosen career in the field of IT and also to built up their entrepreneurial skills. Today, Mr.Suhas Gopinath has proved that the age is no constraint for an individual to be sucessful by his/her dedication and hard work.
Are you a busy parent hardly finding time to concentrate on your child's studies? Don't you have time to attend parent-teachers meetings? Don't worry. Here is a software that gives you a graph of your daughter/son's performance.
The `student management system' is developed by the United States-based Globus Inc., run by Suhas Gopinath, a 19-year-old entrepreneur from Bangalore.
The system will inform you through Short Message Service or e-mail whether your daughter/son has turned up for classes. Interacting with mediapersons after speaking at the `Meet the CEO programme' organised by the Training and Placement Cell and Student's Guild of Service (SGS) of the Dr. Mahalingam College of Engineering and Technology, here on Tuesday, the world's youngest CEO, Mr. Suhas, said that the software was installed in 100 schools in Nigeria and another 100 in the European countries.
The software would carry a student's score and rank, comparison of it with his classmates and appraisals by the teacher. The report would portray capabilities of the student, his/her behaviour in the class and interaction with friends. Parents can look at the virtual mark sheet on the website itself.
At present, the company was negotiating with the Ministry of Human Resource Development to introduce it in all the 870 Kendriya Vidyalaya schools across the country and in Mascow and Dubai.
Installation in five minutes
"We have developed a module based on the requirements of Kendriya Vidyalaya and they are evaluating it. Once they are satisfied, we will install the software in a phased manner. Installing the software needs just five minutes,'' said Mr. Suhas.
Subsidised cost
After installing the software at Government schools, the company plans to sell it to private schools. According to Mr. Suhas, it will charge a subsidised Rs. 5,000 for Government schools and Rs. 30,000 for private schools. Addressing students, the second year B.E. student of a private college in Bangalore emphasised that engineering graduates should be job providers instead of job-seekers.
His $5 million company is targeting a $20 million turnover this fiscal and is planning to list in the Newyork Stock Exchange. The company has offices in 11 countries.
BBC RECOGNIZES MR. SUHAS GOPINATH AS THE WORLD’S YOUNGEST CEO

November 17, 2003 – BBC, one of the world’s leading news media recognized Mr. Suhas Gopinath as the world’s youngest CEO for his achievement in expanding the organization as a leading multi-national company offering cost-effective solutions in web, software, e-commerce, networking and mobile.
Mr. Suhas Gopinath aged 17 years was also recognized by other media worldwide like Washington Times, Indian Express Times of India, CNBC, The Streats, etc.
“I am extremely thankful BBC and all the other media for conveying the mission of our organization and giving us exposure which has encouraged other youngsters to build their entrepreneurial skills and talent in the field of Information Technology,” said Mr. Suhas Gopinath, CEO and President of Globals Inc.
HE SPORTS a navy blue blazer, talks shop with Australian IT firms, enthusing young IT professionals in India to think big like him, even as he smiles at friends and relatives who'd dropped by to visit him at Bangalore IT.com 2004. This teenaged Bangalore boy, CEO of Globals Inc., is the world's youngest CEO. Just 18, Suhas Gopinath is well on his way to mint millions. And, oh yes, he's also trying to earn his engineering degree at M.S. Ramaiah College.
The soft-spoken Suhas with his shy gaze is hardly what you expect to see in a CEO in an aggressive, IT-driven age. With over 600 `company members', as he likes to call them, spread over 11 countries and 250 clients, one wouldn't dispute his swift success.
U.S. patent
Consider this — his company has now developed a data management tool that can help IT companies cut down their workforce and costs. "We are talking with Infosys and B2K, former IT secretary Vivek Kulkarni's company, to take up our tool. The software is in the process of a U.S. patent, and it will be the first patent I will have registered in my name as a major," says Suhas, who turned 18 last week.
He has had problems, being underage. India's legal wrangles against minors setting up private enterprises was what drove him to the U.S., the land of free enterprise where concessions are made for young entrepreneurs to set up shop. Suhas recalls how, at a conclave for CEOs at the Indian Institute of Science, he was stopped at the hallowed portals.
"I was at the lab in college and dressed casually for class. I got a call inviting me for this education seminar. But when I went to IISc, the security guard told me, `This seminar is for CEOs, not for college students. I can't let you in.' I had to call the organisers to come and rescue me."
Not easy
Even in the U.S., he's had to party with seniors and competitors and tell them he can't drink because he was underage. "People are also suspicious that I'm a bluffer when I say I'm the CEO of a company," he says exasperatedly.
"I've missed out completely on my teenage life," he admits, but firmly believes he's not a child prodigy who'll typically burn out and fade out. He describes how friends often tease him when he refuses to go out for a movie or lunch with them, saying he'll definitely retire when he's 24!
But there's something about age and Suhas. The oldest employee of his company is 26. "I want our company to become a platform for youngsters with IT and entrepreneurial skills," he says. Young students in India, especially rural India (who the company has equipped with PCs), school dropouts in the U.S. — all between the ages of 17 and 26 years — are employees who contribute to his e-commerce and web development projects.
The Bangalore wing of operations started six months ago and the team has been commissioned by the National Cricket Academy to design the Indian team's official website and individual sites for each cricketer.
Suhas started designing web pages when he was 14 at his neighbourhood cyber café. There was no computer at home, and when it eventually came, it came sans an internet connection. "My mother always thought I went to play games at the cyber café." When he realised he would never gather the $70 needed to set up his own website, he approached Network Solutions, a Fortune 500 company, for help. The company allowed him to register his domain free of cost. So when he was in his 10th standard, Suhas launched his interactive site coolhindustan.com. Impressed, the company offered him a job as its webmaster over weekends and offered to sponsor his education in the U.S. But friends suggested: "Why work for an American company? Why not start one of our own and offer your services to them?" And that's how Globals Inc. happened.
CEO and in command he may be, but Suhas is a complete mamma's boy. "My mother is a very orthodox person. Whatever happens, she wants me to complete my engineering course scoring high marks. I tried telling her Bill Gates is not a graduate. She says not everyone can be a Bill Gates. But I hope at least my company can be a Microsoft."
Bigger dream
So with dreams of building an empire, Suhas attends class at M.S. Ramaiah college. He's in the second year of Infoscience Engineering and shuttles between the U.S. and Bangalore — — a month here a month there — to run his company and study. "I always wanted to be a veterinarian. But my mom thought it was not a secure job and no girl would marry me! Today, in my spare time, I volunteer at CUPA."
Bill Gates is his role model. But he's never replied to Suhas's numerous mails. Suhas, however, is ever hopeful that one day he'll meet him.
Suhas has often said in the media that he wanted to move his company to India once he became a major. But, as with others who perhaps have tasted sweet success on shores abroad, coming back is not easy. As he explains: "Nearly 75 per cent of our clients are in America. It will be difficult working out of India. But if the State Government helps with infrastructure and land, maybe we can move in the next six months... "
